Operators need coaching, not surveillance
"The operators are not working" is a complaint you hear from almost every manager. The usual answer is more control: count the calls, watch the screen, demand a daily report.
It works — but in the wrong direction.
Why counting is not enough
Give an operator a target of 50 calls a day and they will make 50 calls. But calls get shorter, the easy list gets called and the hard one gets skipped, and quality drops because nobody measures it.
That is not laziness — it is measurement logic. People improve what is measured. So *what* you measure is the important decision.
Three things worth measuring
- Response time — the metric with the largest effect on sales and
the easiest to improve.
- Stage-to-stage conversion — not total deals, which also depend on
list quality.
- Conversation quality — script followed, needs discovered,
objection handled, next step agreed.
The third used to be the hard one: out of 100 calls a day, a manager hears five. The other 95 are invisible. That is the gap AI analysis closes.
From control to coaching
| Control | Coaching |
|---|---|
| The manager sees the report | The operator sees it themselves |
| "You didn't follow the script" | "Next time you could say this" |
| End of month | Right after the call |
| Comparison: who is worst | Growth: you versus last week |
The second column works better because it arrives in time, as advice rather than punishment.
